Satellite Academies

Utah POST oversees and regulates several satellite academies in the state, which offer basic training programs.

With the exception of the Utah Department of Corrections Academy, the Satellite programs are geared toward those wishing to gain certification who have not been hired by an agency. The Utah Department of Corrections academy only trains individuals who have been hired by the Department of Corrections or who have been hired as correctional officers at one of the Sheriff’s Offices within the State.

Individuals who have not been hired by an agency are referred to as self-sponsored, meaning the student pays the expense of the training at one of the satellite academies. Many satellite academies hold classes during the evening and weekend hours to accommodate those working full time. Because the classes are held only a few hours each night it takes longer to complete the training. Contact the individual satellite academy for enrollment information.

Training at the satellite academies mirrors that of the regular academy, all learning objectives and instructor requirements are the same as those for sessions held at POST. A student who graduates from a satellite academy receives the same certification status as a Utah Peace Officer as if they had attended the academy at POST.
