Emergency Vehicle Operations for New Recruits – Self-Sponsored

This 40 hour course is intended for basic training cadets and satisfies the requirement for Law Enforcement Officer Certification.   To be accepted into this training a cadet must have successfully completed the LEO block of training at a satellite academy, and have been employed as, or received a conditional offer of employment as, a law enforcement officer.

Note: Applicants for Self Sponsored Courses must submit a letter from the law enforcement agency indicating they have a conditional offer of employment.

Course Goal:
The cadet will learn basic and advanced skills such as hand position, steering techniques, use of police radio, braking, and evasive maneuvers. Cadets will also learn multi-tasking and critical decision making crucial in the law enforcement driving environment.

Course Direction:
This course will give the cadet the required skills to properly and safely operate a law enforcement emergency vehicle. This course is mandatory in order to meet the requirements to acquire law enforcement officer certification.

Required Equipment:
The officer should bring an approved DOT helmet. However, if one is not available,
POST will provide one. Officers may use their department issued vehicle during this
training.

Learning Objectives:
This course will follow the current learning objectives outlined in the Law Enforcement Officer curriculum as approved by the Utah POST Council.

Session Schedules:
Each Basic EVO course requires daylight and darkness driving.  All EVO courses will start at 1300 hours, on Monday of week one.  Tuesday of week one will start at 0700 hours.  All other starting and ending times will be determined during the session based upon daylight, weather, session size etc.  During the second week of training each student will be scheduled to attend one night for a darkness driving session (additional nighttime sessions may be required depending on student performance). Starting time for all nighttime sessions will be announced during the course.
