POST Leadership and Management Academy

Course Description:
This new POST sponsored course meets the leadership and employee discipline requirements for the POST Middle Management Certificate, at no cost to the officer of the sponsoring department and eliminates the need for departments to pay for the expensive leadership programs that have been used in the past to fulfill this requirement.

The Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training, Leadership and Management Academy is designed to prepare all law enforcement leaders with practical skills, knowledge, tools, and abilities to become more effective leaders in the criminal justice system and the communities we serve.

Course Goal:

Every law enforcement decision, whether tactical, political or policy driven, requires effective, efficient, and ethical decision-making leadership. Effective and ethical leadership improves employee morale and community trust. Numerous studies have shown that law enforcement officers feel their organizations lack quality leadership. Highly publicized failed police tactical and investigative decisions in the recent past have highlighted problems with law enforcement leadership. Further, law enforcement policy and practice decisions have led to a lack of trust from the communities we serve. Law enforcement faces a crisis in recruitment and retention, and it is well known poor leadership is a major contributor to low employee morale.

The goal of this course is to provide law enforcement leaders with the skills, knowledge, and guidance, in utilizing proper and informed leadership techniques to improve the internal organizational functions and processes of leadership as well as employee guidance and discipline. With improved leadership and decision-making abilities, law enforcement will become more transparent to the communities we serve, thus improving community relations. Almost all police/community relationship failures can be attributable to failed leadership.

Providing law enforcement leaders with an improved background in leadership and decision making will certainly improve the perception of law enforcement in the communities we serve.

By expanding the participant’s exposure to varied leadership practices and responses, this course will provide the student an expanded background of personal resources to employ in their daily leadership roles.
